A Tennessee judge ruled that while Spotify did not have the proper streaming license, as the rapper's publisher claimed, any imposed penalties would have fallen on Kobalt Music Group.
After five years, Spotify just won a copyright lawsuit over Eminem’s music. His publishing company, Eight Mile Style, sued Spotify, claiming they didn’t have the proper license to stream his songs and asked for $40 million. But the judge ruled that Kobalt Music Group, which collects royalties for Eminem, should’ve been the one paying up. Even though Spotify didn’t have the right license, the blame shifted to Kobalt. In the end, Spotify avoided any penalties, and Kobalt might have to cover legal fees.
